Instructions for Editors and Authors

Lockwood Press invites proposals for manuscripts on the languages, archaeology, history, religions, and cultures of the Near Eastern and eastern Mediterranean worlds from earliest antiquity through the Middle Ages. In addition to monographs, the press will consider essay collections, Festschrifts, and revised dissertations. For our policies on these, see below. If you are interested in contributing to one of our journals, please navigate to the journals page. If you would like to propose a new journal or inquire about transferring a journal to Lockwood Press, please email: admin@lockwoodpress.com.

Prospective Authors/New Proposals

If your project suits one of our series, you should communicate with the appropriate series editor, whose details can be found on the respective series pages of this website.

If your project falls outside any of our series, we are still happy to consider it. Please send us a proposal following our book proposal guidelines to admin@lockwoodpress.com.

Series editors should consult the document advice for series editors.

The Editorial Process: What You Can Expect

Lockwood Press is committed to maintaining a high academic standard for all its books and journals. Unlike many commercial publishers, we enforce a policy of peer review for all books and journals. The peer review process can take from two to four months. Also unlike many commercial publishers, Lockwood Press copy edits all book-length manuscripts submitted for production. The author can be confident that his or her book has received the attention it deserves and will make the best possible impression on readers.

Royalties

Royalties are paid on all titles as stipulated in the author's contract. Lockwood author royalties are usually set at 10 percent of net revenue (i.e., 10 percent of the amount returned to Lockwood Press upon sale of a book; this sum usually amounts to approximately 6 percent of the list price). Lockwood Press does not typically pay royalties to editors of essay collections or Festschriften. Royalties are paid annually between December and February each year, unless your contract designates otherwise. Please contact the administrator with any queries admin@lockwoodpress.com.

Free Copies

Authors and volume editors typically receive 10 gratis copies of the print book to distribute at their discretion. Lockwood does not provide pdfs of a complete work to authors or editors. Contributors to Festschrifts and essay collections will receive a pdf of their article. We do not provide gratis copies (print or electronic) of such collected works to contributors, but contributors may purchase a copy of the work at a 40% discount.

Author’s Discount

Authors and editors of volumes published by Lockwood Press are eligible to purchase copies of their work at a 40 percent discount from the list price. Orders may be placed directly with our distributor, www.isdistribution.com.

Rights and Permissions

The author is responsible for securing all necessary permissions to reprint materials that may be contained in the manuscript (guidelines about permissions and how they should be secured are covered in the Copyright, "Fair Use," and Permissions guidelines). Additional information may be found in chapter 4 of the 15th edition of the Chicago Manual of Style.

Copyright

Book copyrights are retained by Lockwood Press. The Press pays a small fee to register the copyright with the U.S. Copyright Office. Requests for permission by an author to reuse his or her work in another publication are routinely granted, assuming that the subsequent publication will not infringe on sales of the Lockwood publication and with the stipulation that the subsequent publication print an appropriate statement of Lockwood’s prior publication of the work. Authors are paid a share of the return from the licensing of any subsidiary rights and permissions to print.

Marketing Your Book

We welcome suggestions for marketing your book. Please keep an eye on the list of conferences (see website listing) we participate in and if we are not listing something appropriate to your book, send us details. We also produce flyers for mailings or for your own use, so let us know if you need any. Your book will continue to be marketed as long as it remains in print. Authors may also suggest reviewers and journals to which books should be sent.

Festschrifts

Lockwood Press will occasionally consider essay collections honoring prominent scholars. Such volumes are accepted at the discretion of the Press and only with financial support in the form of a subvention, usually in the range of $10,000–$12,000, depending on the size and complexity of the project. In rare instances and only at the discretion of the Press such volumes may be published with color. Contributors to such volumes should be made aware in advance that color may not be an option.
